Description and Goals

There are two main goals of the course. The first is to obtain a thorough understanding of the foundations of geometry. The second is to gain some facility in writing mathematical proofs.
Topics covered in the course include axiomatic systems, incidence geometry, axioms for plane geometry, neutral geometry, Euclidean geometry, hyperbolic geometry, and transformations. Additional topics will be covered as time permits. One possible additional topic is an introduction to fractal geometry.
Text: Foundations of Geometry (second edition) by Gerard A. Venema.

Homework

Assignments:
The assignments will be added here, as the course progresses. These assignments will not be turned in for a grade. Students are expected to do the assignments as part of the preparation for quizzes and exams.
January 6: Read Chapter 1 of the text.
January 8: Read Sections 2.1 and 2.2.
January 10: Read Section 2.3 and 2.4, and do exercises # 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 of section 2.4 exercises page 23 – 24.

Final Grades

Grades will be based on four exams and four quizzes. The quizzes will be worth 10 points each. The exams will be worth 40 points each. So there are 200 possible points. All of the exams and quizzes will be given during the regular class period. In addition, an optional final exam will be given during the final exam period, which is Friday, May 2, from 10:00AM to 12:00. Students who take the optional final exam could receive a higher or lower course grade (compared to the grade they would receive if they did not take the optional final exam), depending on the final exam score.
