Travelling
By air: Gainesville airport is served only by Delta Airlines and by U. S. Airways. If you are staying at the Holiday Inn or Hilton, use their van service to get to the hotel (reserve this ahead of time with the hotel). If you are staying at the Rush Lake, there is no van service, but you can notify Neil White white("at symbol")math.ufl.edu several days in advance to arrange a pick-up, or take a taxi (which is not always available at our small airport).
By air, alternatively: Virtually all major airlines fly to Jacksonville, Orlando, or Tampa. Limousine or taxi service to Gainesville is available but quite expensive. For example, A1 Yellow Cab (352-374-9696) will pick you up or deliver you to Jacksonville Airport (but not Orlando or Tampa) one-way for $72 for one person, more for additional people, with an additional tip expected, and two-day advance notice required. Perhaps a better idea is car rental. Gainesville is about 1.5 hour drive from Jacksonville, over 2 hours from Orlando or Tampa airports.
Bus or train: Neither of these is easily accessible from the airports, and neither can be highly recommended. Greyhound Bus Lines service Gainesville; their terminal is about a mile or more from our hotels-- see above for pick-up if needed. We do not recommend the bus service, as the terminals tend to be in less safe neighborhoods. Amtrak train service does not come to Gainesville, but does stop in Waldo, about 10 miles away. Service is very sparse: the only arrival time in Waldo is 3:10 A.M. local time. You will need to arrange with Neil White white("at symbol")math.ufl.edu for pick-up.
Driving: addresses are easy to find in Gainesville, because the city is laid out on Cartesian coordinates, with streets running North-South, and Avenues East-West. However, Streets and Avenues are not always continuous: for example, both the Hilton Hotel and Rush Lake Motel are on SW 16th Avenue, but SW 16th Avenue is not continuous between them.
Driving from the South on I-75: take the first Gainesville exit, Williston Road. At the end of the exit ramp, turn left (East) on Williston Road. If going to the Hilton, turn left again almost immediately on SW 34th Street, and proceed directly to the Hilton at about SW 16th Ave. If going to the Holiday Inn, Rush Lake, or Little Hall, continue NorthEast on Williston road about 2 miles to SW 13th Street and turn left. For Rush Lake Motel, proceed to SW 16th Avenue, turn left, and it's on your right. For Little Hall, proceed to SW 2nd Ave., and turn left into the University of Florida. For the Holiday Inn, proceed just past University Avenue (two blocks past SW 2nd Ave) and it's on your right.
Driving from the North on Interstate 75, take the exit for Newberry Road, State Route 26. Proceed East into town; at about W 37th Street, the road forks into two roads, and either one may be taken, as they rejoin later on. If going to the Hilton, turn right at SW 34th Street, and proceed to SW 16th Ave. If going to the Holiday Inn, Rush Lake or Little Hall, continue on Newberry Road (or University Avenue) to NW/SW 13th Street. The Holiday Inn is right there, and Little Hall is two blocksto your right off of SW13th Street, turning in at SW 2nd Avenue. For the Rush Lake Motel, turn right from University Avenue onto SW 13th Street, and proceed to SW 16th Avenue where you turn right, and then see Rush Lake Motel on your right.
Driving from Jacksonville, take Interstate 10 west to U.S. Route 301. Take this South to Waldo, being very careful to observe the speed limits in the towns of Lawtey and Waldo. In Waldo, turn right on State Route 24 to Gainesville. Take Route 24 all the way into Gainesville, where it turns right onto University Avenue (as you see the Avenue numbers decline, University Avenue is zero). Take University Avenue to the west until SW/NW 13th Street, where you will find the Holiday Inn. Turn left on 13th Street to get to Little Hall (turning right on SW 2nd Avenue) or to Rush Lake Motel (turning right on SW 16th Avenue). If going to the Hilton, continue West on University Avenue to SW 34th Street, turning left, and proceeding to SW 16th Avenue.
Parking: this can be a problem, except on Saturday, the 18th, when it will be easy to park right by Little Hall, most likely, and no permit is needed. If you are staying in one of the three recommended hotels, it is best to park your car there and walk (or use the van service from the Hilton). If you need to park on campus on the 16th or 17th, we hope to have a small number of permits available; please email Neil White white("at symbol")math.ufl.edu beforehand, if possible.
