Textbook. Concepts in Calculus II. Authored by Prof. Miklos Bona and Prof. Sergei Shabanov. Parts of chapters 7, 9, 10, 8, and 6 will be covered.
Goals of Course.
Our goal is to help the students achieve maximum mathematical maturity by:
- stressing the importance of using precise mathematical definitions of the abstract concepts studied,
- helping the students develop some skills in using logic to prove the properties which follow some of the definitions, and
- giving the students considerable experience in using their skills in logic and the basic definitions to work out the exercises in the course.
Tests including Final Exam.
Tests (each graded based on 100 points possible) will be given during our
regular class meetings on February 1, February 29, and April 4. These dates all fall on Wednesday. The final exam (required and graded based on 100 points)
will be given in our regular classroom on Friday May 4th from 10:00am to 12:00 noon.
Make-up Tests.
If a student must miss a scheduled test, then he or she should discuss the matter at that time with me; and a reasonable opportunity to rectify this problem will be agreed upon.
Attendance Points.
One point will be given for
each class period attended up to a maximum of 50 points. This allows
absences without loss of attendance points as we have more than 50 class
meetings this semester. But if one has less than 50 attendance
points due to extenuating circumstances, this should be brought to my
attention at or before the time the final exam is handed in.
Final Course Grade.
The final course
grade is based on the total of 450 possible points. (Thus the
attendance points are not really bonus points since the 50 points
are included in the 450 base.) The (tentative) lower bound for each
letter grade A, B+, B, etc, is as follows:
Special Accommodations.
Students requesting classroom accommodation must first register with the Dean
of Students Office. The Dean of Students Office will provide documentation to
the student who must then provide this documentation to the Instructor when
requesting accommodation.
UF Grading Policy. UF grading policies for assigning grade points
Welcome to the Students.
In my office (or by phone), I am always delighted to answer questions
about homework or concepts discussed in the book. If you have questions but
cannot come by my office during my office hours (and cannot get answers by
phone), then please arrange with me a suitable time when we can meet. As a
friendly suggestion, I should say that if you successfully complete all homework on time and properly review for each test, then you should make a very good
grade in the course.
My tests consist of routine questions just like those in the
homework, and generous partial credit is given on each erroneous
solution if it reveals that you have actually learned the
material pertaining to the problem. Before each test, you can
usually find review problems on my web page. ( Caution. You should not neglect homework with the idea that you can just go over the review and
then be prepared for the test. There simply is not enough review time to do
this!) Also, from time to time, I state in class that one or two
particular problems will certainly be on the next test.
(These problems are important problems but problems which students
may not expect to be on a test unless forewarned to rehearse their solutions.
So to avoid losing 14, or more, free gift points, you should be in class and
take note of these announcements.)
Now, if in spite of all our efforts, you should fall down on a test, you
should see me promptly about this. I try to give whatever special attention
or consideration would be helpful and appropriate. I am dedicated to work
for the best interest of students at heart.
I wish for each of you a wonderful positive experience as you
study this marvelous (and extremely useful) mathematical system
called the calculus. I am sure this will be the case if
you make good effort.
