Contradance | Calling 2013

(JK-calling in 2012, in  2011, in  2010,
or Dances/Composers or Tunes/Bands)

You are warmly welcomed to email or telephone me if you'd like to augment my contra-calling schedule.

Decode squashATuflDOTedu for my eddress.
My phone number in Word/Arabic/Roman numerals is:

At Vernals2012, I'm calling a no-walk-through Three Ceremonies Dancers twirling with a flowing tune from Montage.

From Vernals2011, a no walk-through Chainsaw Reel Dancers twirlingwith a high-energy tune from Footloose. (Version on facebook)

Barnstorm is playing a smooth tune, while I call Sweet Music Dancers twirling, at UFCC (the Univ. of Florida Contra Club).

The Flying Turtles play while I call The Cure for the Claps [waltz at 2:55] Dancers twirling, at O'Leno.

Gigs for 2013 are below. A memorable gig from 2011 was the End of the World dance dance.

For the curious, here is an animation which parodies contra dancers/callers. And the cheerful sequel.

Dance

UF Folkdancers, the cast of DRACULA 1992 Diane Forkel Jane Jonathan King Karen Coletti Max Forkel Piotr

The UF Folkdancers in the cast of the first DRACULA production of the "Dance Alive!" ballet company.

(The photo is from late 1992 and, I believe, come from Max's collection; Max is the fourth dancer from the right, wearing the red cap. Yours truly, Squash, is the fourth from the left, in white shirt, black pants, and red sash. Standing to my right, mostly in green, is my dance wife, Jane. The folkdancers are standing on the rim of the fountain in front of Gainesville's Performing Arts Center.)

Contra dancing

Most Boltin/O'Leno photos on this page are from one of Dave Pokorney's Galleries. (Clicking a photo gives a larger and uncropped version.)

Erin and I have been contra dancing a long time, and both our kids danced in the womb. Further down the page is a photo of our son, Isaac, acting as videographer when I was calling.

Here (on left) is a lovely photo (from the 7 Feb, 2010, Boltin contra dance) of daughter Ruth and wife Erin. On right, Ruth is promenading with our good friend Cydney.

Four regular local (Gainesvillish) contradances

Contra music

From time to time, prospective dancers have asked me, before plunging in to try contra, What is the music like?

Some contra bands provide on-line samples of their music. Rather than list individual websites, below are a few links to music at the Contracopia website [which I found via a websearch; I have no connection to the site]. (N.B: The website Contracopia is one-letter-away from the band yclept Contratopia.)
