Getting to Gainesville
By air into Gainesville: The Gainesville
Regional Airport (airport code
GNV)
is served by USAirways Express, Continental Airlines, and ASA (affiliated with
Delta Airlines) from the hub cities of Charlotte NC, Miami, and
Atlanta, respectively.
Taxi service is usually available curbside at the Gainesville Airport.
The approximate cost from the airport to the University of Florida campus
or the hotels is around $20 depending on luggage.
Patrons of the Holiday Inn University
Center, Sheraton Hotel, and University Centre Hotel can use the hotel courtesy
phones near the Baggage Claim area to call for a free shuttle to the hotel.
By air into Jacksonville or Orlando:
For more flights and better prices you can
check one of the other area airports. Jacksonville
(JAX)
is 85 miles northwest of Gainesville (driving time = 1.5 hours)
and Orlando
(MCO)
is 109 miles south of Gainesville (driving time = 2.0 hours). You can rent
a car at these airports or take one of the airport shuttles. If you plan
to take a shuttle you must make reservations in advance. If you
arrive without reservations and take a cab from one of these airports it will
cost over $100 one way.

By car: Gainesville is on Interstate 75, approximately 300 miles
south of Atlanta, Georgia, and 300 miles north of Miami, Florida.
- From I-75 take exit 76 which is Newberry Road (= State Route 26).
Go east on Newberry Road. This becomes becomes University Avenue, which
borders the University of Florida campus on the north. As you drive east
the cross streets will go from NW 75th Street to W 13th Street. From 13th

- From Jacksonville Airport take Interstate 95 South and get
off in a few miles onto the ``beltway'', Interstate 295, going West/South.
Take 295 (which turns south as it goes around the city) about 10 miles
to Interstate 10.
Now take Interstate 10 west about 12 miles to U.S. Route 301, follow
301 south about 36 miles to Waldo, change to State Route 24, which brings you to Gainesville in about 10 miles. Take care with the speed limits on Route 301 and 24, as
they change suddenly and the roads are well-patroled.
From State Route 24, turn west on University Avenue (= State Route 26).
As you drive west on University Avenue, the numbers of the cross streets will
decrease to zero at Main St and then increase to W 13th St.

- From Orlando take the Beeline Expressway east to the Florida Turnpike,
go north on the Florida Turnpike to Interstate 75, and continue as above.
