  • The Course Goals: to help a student become familiar with (and understand as much as possible ) the basics of vector algebra, vector functions, multivariable calculus and vector calculus, as well as develop the corresponding computational skills. To do that as efficiently as possible, a student is expected to read the textbook section to be discussed in an upcoming class and to think about the set of questions which stress the key ideas of the section.
  • Course Material: I intend to cover chapters 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 in the textbook. I may skip some sections in those chapters due to the time constraint. The course material includes homework problems. I will assign a set of problems to be worked after each section covered. These problems are taken from the exercises following each section in the textbook and their numbers will be posted on this website (see "Homework Problems" below). It is absolutely necessary for a student to go through all of these problems and do as many as it is necessary to make him/her comfortable with the corresponding section's material. In other words, a student should be able to work all of those problems. Also the test and quiz questions may be based on the homework problems, although they need not be the same. There is a discussion section each Thursday. It will be a problem seminar where students are encouraged to ask questions about the course material and discuss homework problems.
  • Grading: There will be 3 tests, 40 points each, and a cumulative final, worth 50 points. There will also be 7 unannounced quizzes, each worth 6 points. Lowest two quiz scores will be dropped. I may add some bonus problems to a test, so you may receive more than 100% of the points (100% for a test is 40 points, for the final it is 50 points). The test dates are to be announced on this website. The tests, as well as the quizzes will be given during Thursday's discussion sections. The test and the quiz problems will be based on the homework problems and the examples shown in class, but they need not be the same. Unless announced otherwise, the use of calculators is NOT allowed during a test. After a test or quiz, you have ONE WEEK to discuss the grading of that test or quiz. After one week no complaints will be considered. I will also occasionally collect HW problems during the discussion class. Those problems will be graded mainly for completeness, each for 2 points.
  • Make-ups: are possible for the tests only, upon providing a written documentation of a serious reason to miss a test (e.g. a doctor's note). This, except for a medical emergency, must be done in advance and in person. You may write me an e-mail to set up an appointment, but the issue must be settled in person. There are no make-ups for missed quizzes, since there are two drops. If you have a valid excuse for not taking a test, PLEASE DO NOT TAKE IT, and let me know. There is NOTHING we can do about your test grade AFTER you have taken the test and the grade has been assigned (except for correcting possible errors in grading). Also, under NO CIRCUMSTANCE will anyone be allowed to take a test or a quiz earlier than the time for which the test or quiz is scheduled. Any make-up must be taken afterwards. In particular, if there is a reason serious enough (and documented) for a student to miss the final exam, so that he/she is not able to make it up after the scheduled date during the week of finals, then, after the undergraduate coordinator's approval, the student will be assigned a grade of "I" (incomplete), and complete the course by taking the final on the new date stated in the approval form.

    Homework Problems

Following are the problems assigned for you to work. They are chosen from the exercises at the end of each section we will have covered. You don't have to do all of them, but make sure that you GO through all of them and do enough to make yourself comfortable with the material of the corresponding section. In other words, you should be able to do all of them. Some of the exam problems may be chosen from these problems. The problems in parentheses are optional.
