Restaurant Guide

The guide is divided into somewhat poorly defined parts by geography.

Near Campus and closer to the Reitz Union

  • Reitz Union Food Court. Located on campus in the Reitz Union. Food court says it all.

  • Arredondo Cafe in the Reitz Union. Take the elevator. Open 11-2 weekdays for a buffet lunch for $7.95. A reasonable choice for lunch.

  • The Swamp. Located at 1642 W. University just north and a couple of blocks east of the football stadium. Fairly close to the Reitz Union.

  • Steamers. A Gainesville landmark. Between 16th and 17th Streets (close to the post office) a block north of University Avenue. From sloppy Joe's, to fried rice dishes, to vegetarian tempeh.

  • Jimmy John's Gourmet, 1724 W. University Avenue. Gourmet sandwiches. They deliver, (352) 375-7222.

  • There are many other casual restaurants on University just north of campus. Many of these are between 17th and 18th streets just west of the Swamp restaurant and an easy walk from the Reitz Union. Some examples, the Pita Pit, Tijuana Flats, Alan's Cubana, and Fritanga Latin Grill.

Near Campus and closer the Math Building

  • Bistro 1245, 1245 W. University Avenue. Since this is across the street from the Holiday Inn, so close to campus, it is an obvious lunch choice (also serves dinner).

  • Leonardo's by the slice. Would you guess pizza? Next to the bistro. Where you'll want to go for coffee on Saturday morning after you taste the swill we serve at the math building. Good pizza and calzones.

  • Burrito Brothers Taco Company, 1402 W. University Avenue, behind the Presbyterian Student Center which is due north across University Avenue from the Math Department. Serves Mexican food every day 11 AM-9 PM. Eat in on the outdoor patio; take it out; or have them ship it to you frozen. Take home a T-Shirt. A Gainesville landmark.

  • Saigon Legend, 1228 West University Avenue. On the North side of University Avenue a couple of blocks East of 13th street.

  • El Indio, 407 NW 13th Street. Take out mexican food with pleasant picnic tables. Named after the famous El Indio at the foot of Washington Street in San Diego. Not the original, but pretty good for North Florida. Five blocks North of University on 13th street.

  • Mother Earth, 521 NW 13th Street. So its not a restaurant, but it is close to campus and has health conscious groceries. On the East side of 13th Street about six blocks North of University - just North of El Indio.

  • There are many casual restaurants on both sides of University Avenue in the blocks East of the math building.

  • Harvest Thyme Cafe. Super Sandwiches and sides. On West University almost downtown, they are listed here (and not with the other downtown restaurants) because they will deliver to campus, and the Holiday Inn. 352-384-9497. You might get asked about your time in the 100 (butter)fly.

  • Karma Cream. 1025 W. University. Coffee and ice cream, or coffee ice cream.
  • Downtown

Downtown is about one mile east of campus on University Avenue. University and Main street is ground zero. It is possible to be aggressively panhandled walking between the University and downtown.

  • Leonardo's 706. Really it is - located at 706 W. University, six blocks west of the Holiday Inn on the north side of University Avenue. Thus it is really between close to campus and downtown. A nice choice for dinner.

  • The Paramount Grill, 12 SW 1st Avenue. Anonymous review follows.
    • Great lunches! Salads and wrap sandwiches for around $7, or half portions of each.
    • For those who know some of the local culinary history, the owner and chef used to be Wolfgang's chef. Very inventive dishes, especially the fish fare. The boss loves to experiment with mixes of spices and seasonings. I have had some of the best crab cakes there.
    • The wine list is satisfactory, and reasonably priced.
    • Service is attentive but not overbearing.
    • You may wish to reserve.

  • Emiliano's Cafe. Latin cuisine and great deserts. Located Downtown at 7 Southeast 1st Avenue. A longtime Gainesville favorite.

  • The Top, 30 North Main Street. On the West side of Main Street just north of University Avenue. An interesting menu which does include vegetarian dishes. It has a bar and one lonely pool table. Squares must leave by 10 pm.

  • Liquid Ginger. 101 Southeast 2nd Place, Suite 118. Asian Grill and Tea House.

  • Big Lou's Pizza. Best Pizza downtown at 5 Southeast 2nd Avenue.

  • Maude's Classic Cafe. Coffee and food and definitely not a chain. Right in the middle of downtown at 101 Southeast 2nd Pl number 101.

  • The Warehouse Restaurant and Lounge, 502 S Main Street. A fairly new restaurant.
  • You Might Need a Car

  • Mildred's Big City Food, 3445 W. University Avenue. Across 34th St. from the Westgate Shopping Center. Satellite "New Deal Cafe", around the corner. Another anonymous review follows.
    • Immensely popular for lunch, in both locations. Table service at the New Deal, vs. cafeteria-style in the main restaurant. The atmospheres are different, although they are fed off the same kitchen. Sandwiches and salads and soups for lunch. Usually crowded and occasionally chaotic, especially in the main restaurant. But the fare is worth the trip.
    • The dinner fare is usually elaborate and exotic; they love to introduce an odd lettuce or two in an appetizer. They have a predilection for (tasty) duck dishes. Service is good, and will range in pitch and tone from the laid-back to the thespian.
    • Mildred's has been featured in Wine Spectator as well for the excellence of their wine list (it is smaller than Daniela's, and varies month to month).
    • Desserts are excellent, but you have to plan ahead, because they are also rich, rich, rich!
    • Reservations strongly recommended.
    • Coffees a specialty of the place.

  • The Taj. 2109 NW 13th Street (US 441). About 21 blocks north of the Holiday Inn on 13th street.

  • La Tienda Latina, 2204 SW 13th Street. About 1.5 miles south of the corner of University and 13th street (Holiday Inn, math department) on 13th street. Six blocks south of the Rush Lake on the West side of Southwest 13th street (equal Highway 441). There is sidewalk on the west side all the way from Campus. Food is still good, but not what you might remember from the SEAM in 2006. Plastic silverware. Go and practice your Spanish.

  • Indian Cuisine, 3550 Southwest 34th Street.

  • Satchel's Pizza, 1800 Northeast 23rd Avenue. Best Pizza in town. Allow plenty of time - sorry I'm late, I was at Satchel's. Cash only.
