MODERN ANALYSIS 1

MAA 5228

Instructor: Paul Robinson

Class: MWF 4; 368 Little Hall

Office: M 6 ; W3, 6, 7 ; F 6

Text: Walter Rudin, Principles of Mathematical Analysis (third edition)

This course (along with MAA 5229) will cover the fundamentals of mathematical analysis. A glance at the Contents of Rudin will indicate its scope: we shall not address Chapters 9 and 10 (on multivariable differential and integral calculus) but will touch upon most of the remaining material.

There will be two written tests for the course: a two-hour evening midterm (approximately half-way through semester) and a two-hour final (at the regularly-scheduled time: 5:30-7:30 on 14 December). In addition, there will be graded homework assignments during most weeks (two of which will be dropped). Final grades will be based on performance on the collected homeworks, midterm and final, all three components being equally weighted.

Makeup tests will be given for the usual documented reasons.
