The Special Year in Topology and Dynamics will bring together groups of experts for a series of week long workshops. Each workshop will include lecture series supported by individual lectures on related topics. There will be ample time for informal meetings and conversations. Financial support is available for graduate students and new PhD's; see the application instructions below. This site will be updated frequently as more information becomes available.
Workshop
on Geometric Topology and Geometric Group Theory, March 3-10, 2002.
Main speakers include Steve Ferry, Mladen Bestvina, Michael Farber,
Paul Baum, Nigel Higson, Sergio Fenley, Tadeusz Januszkiewicz,
and Shmuel Weinberger. This workshop is held in conjunction with
the Ninth Florida Conference in Topology.
This conference has been held periodically for many years under the auspices
of the University of Florida and Florida State University.
(Tentative schedule)
Workshop
on Topology in Biology, March 11-14, 2002. Main speakers include De Witt Sumners
and James Keener. De Witt Sumners will speak on
the uses of knot theory in DNA research.
James Keener will communicate his research in
mathematical physiology. Chris Gole will give a talk on new results in phyllotaxis
using dynamical systems theory. Isabel Darcy, Sergei Pilyugin, Hugo Cabrera and Philip Boyland
will also give talks on their research.
(Tentative schedule)
Workshop
on Low-Dimensional Dynamical Systems, November 8-13, 2001.
Topics will include rotation theory, groups of diffeomorphism of one-manifolds,
indecomposable continua, complex dynamics, unimodal maps, and
the "two inverses" problem. Main speakers are John Franks and Michal
Misiurewicz. (Schedule)
Workshop
on Applications of Dynamical Systems,
November 8-13 (the date has been changed because of a change in the
football schedule).
Topics will include Hamilitonian systems, dynamics
of PDE, dynamics of fluid flows and biodynamics.
