Getting to Gainesville

By air into Gainesville:  The Gainesville Regional Airport (airport code GNV) is served by Delta Connection ASA, US Airways Express/Mesa Airlines, Continental Connection/Gulfstream International Airlines. These airlines connect Gainesville to Atlanta GA, Charlotte NC, and Tampa, Miami FL respectively.

Taxi service is usually available curbside at the Gainesville Airport. The approximate cost from the airport to the University of Florida campus or the hotels is $12 to $15 depending on luggage. Patrons of the Holiday Inn University Center can use the hotel courtesy phones near the Baggage Claim area to call for a free shuttle to the hotel.

If you rent a car at the Gainesville airport, turn right onto NE 39th Avenue (State Road 222) when exiting the airport, drive to NW 13th Street (US 441, ML King Blvd), turn left, drive south on 13th Street until you reach the intersection of University Avenue and 13th Street, and from there follow the directions in Getting Around Gainesville below to your hotel. The Holiday Inn University Center is on the lefthand side just north of the intersection with University Avenue; to reach the Reitz Union Hotel, turn right on Museum Road (NW 8th Avenue) and it is two long blocks in; to locate the Rush Lake Motel, turn right on SW 16th Avenue and it appears on the righthand side of the road.

By air into Jacksonville or Orlando:  For more flights and better prices you can check one of the other area airports. Jacksonville (JAX) is 85 miles northwest of Gainesville (driving time = 1.5 hours) and Orlando (MCO) is 109 miles south of Gainesville (driving time = 2.0 hours). Limousine or taxi service to Gainesville is available but can expensive. For example, A1 Yellow Cab (352-374-9696) will pick you up or deliver you to the Jacksonville Airport (JAX) and Orlando (MCO) airports one-way for $65 and $82 respectively, plus $10 for each additional person, and tip expected. Two-day advance notice is required. Runways (rnwy.com) is a new service between JAX and the university. Reservations are required and the price is $35 one way and $60 round trip. There are several name brand rental car companies on the airport at both JAX and MCO.

By car: Gainesville is on Interstate 75, approximately 300 miles south of Atlanta, Georgia, and 300 miles north of Miami, Florida.

  • From I-75 take exit 387 which is Newberry Road (= State Route 26). Go east on Newberry Road. This becomes becomes University Avenue, which borders the University of Florida campus on the north. As you drive east the cross streets will go from NW 75th Street to W 13th Street. From 13th St. follow the directions in Getting around Gainesville below.
  • From Jacksonville Airport take Interstate 95 South and get off in a few miles onto the ``beltway'', Interstate 295, going West/South. Take 295 (which turns south as it goes around the city) about 10 miles to Interstate 10. Now take Interstate 10 west about 12 miles to U.S. Route 301, follow 301 south about 36 miles to Waldo, change to State Route 24, which brings you to Gainesville in about 10 miles. Take care with the speed limits on Route 301 and 24, as they change suddenly and the roads are well-patroled. From State Route 24, turn west on University Avenue (= State Route 26). As you drive west on University Avenue, the numbers of the cross streets will decrease to zero at Main St and then increase to W 13th St. From 13th St. follow the directions in Getting around Gainesville below.
  • From Orlando take the Beeline Expressway east to the Florida Turnpike, go north on the Florida Turnpike to Interstate 75, and continue as above.

Getting Around Gainesville

The city of Gainesville is arranged in a grid. The numbered streets run north-south and the numbered avenues run east-west. The origin of the coordinate system is at University Avenue and Main St., and so University plays the role of "zero" Ave. and Main the role of "zero" St. The quadrants of town are designated NE, NW, SW, and SE. The University of Florida is in the South West portion of the city, south of University Avenue and west of W 13th Street. Registration and most conference events will take place in or near the Mathematics Department in Little Hall which is 0.2 miles from the intersection of University Avenue and W 13th Street. Here's a map of the area near Little Hall which houses the Department of Mathematics.

From the intersection of University Ave. and W 13th St. to the hotels:
Please check the Lodging page for more information.

  • For the Rush Lake Motel", from the intersection of W. 13th and University travel about 1.0 miles south on 13th and take a right at the first light after the underpass which is 16th Ave SW. Your motel will be on the right quite soon after you turn. You enter by the second sign.

  • The Gainesville Days Inn (University) is south of SW 16th Street on the left hand side at 1901 SW 13th Street.
  • The Paramount Plaza Hotel is just over a mile south of campus on highway 441 (S.W. 13th St) on the right hand side.

After you pass the reception house you will be in a large parking area. To your left about 100 yards diagonally across a lot is a 3 story building with outside walkways.
