University Avenue west of 13th Street:
Bistro, 1245 W. University (S) $$. Popular for lunch with
a good selection of salads and sandwiches, excellent squash soup.
Saigon Legend, 1228 W. University (N) $.
Chinese/Vietnamese/Thai food
with vegetarian options.
Cabana Cove Caribbean Grille, 1222 W. University (N) $$.
Tasty resort style food, few options for vegetarians
Caribbean Spice (takeout), 1121 W. University (S) $.
West indian cuisine, lunch specials include meat
or spinach/caloo patty, coco bread, cake and beverage
Farah's on the Avenue, 1120 W. University (N) $$?.
Middle eastern food with some vegan food available; free wireless access.
Gyro Plus, 1011 W. University (S) $. Combinations offer
substantial portions of mediterranean/Greek food.
The hummus is flavorful and the lemonade freshly made.
Saigon Cafe, 808 W. University Avenue (N) $?. Small, family owned
and operated Vietnamese restaurant which also serves sushi.
Atmosphere is casual place. One person recommended the fresh
spinach soup.
Leonardo's 706, 706 W. University (N) $$. pasta, pizza,
Italian/mediterranean food; eat inside or out; good for groups.
Half orders of pasta are available for those with smaller appetites.
13th Street north of University Avenue:
El Indio, 407 NW 13th Street (E) $.
Takeout mexican food with pleasant picnic tables; pretty good
for North Florida.
Book Lovers Cafe, 505 NW 13th Street (E) $. Informal vegetarian dining in
a bookstore; they buy from local organic farmers.
Mother Earth Market, 521 NW 13th Street (E). Organic produce,
deli, bakery and other health conscience items.
North of Campus:
Burrito Brothers Taco Company (in the Presbyterian Student
Center),
1202 W. University Avenue (N) $. Longtime Gainesville favorite.
Cafe Gardens, 1643 NW 1st Avenue (E) $$. Sandwiches, burgers and
more substantial entrees. Most seating outdoors; frequently
busy at lunch.
Steamers, 1618 NW 1st Avenue (N) $. This Gainesville landmark is
a small, order at the counter place with sandwiches (sloppy
Joe's), fried rice dishes, and curry, including vegetarian tempeh.
Fritanga, Latin Grill, 1702 W. University Avenue (E) $. Close in
place for Latin food at a good price; few options for vegetarians.
On Campus:
Little Hall Express, freshly made wraps, pallid burgers,
supermarket sushi, commercial snack food
Broward Dining Center - Fresh Food Company. All-you-can-eat
food with good selection at a reasonable price.
Hub Food Court. Chick-A-Fil, Einstein's Bagels, Zia Juice.
Reitz Union Food Court (on the 2nd level). Subway, Wendy's,
Sushi & Noodle Bar, Capeesh (Italian), Home Zone (American),
Java City. Downstairs: Taco Bell, Orange & Brew.
Near the Rush Lake Motel:
Cedar River Seafood, 1621 SW 13th Street (E) $$. Some of the
best values in fresh seafood in a casual setting.
Sawamura Japanese Steakhouse, 1624 SW 13th Street (W) $$.
Teppanyaki style (tableside) cooking. Early bird specials.
Bahn Thai, 1902 SW 13th Street (W) $$. Well-regarded Thai
food, with substantial vegetarian options. Lunch buffet is a good
value.
La Tienda Latina, 2204 SW 13th Street (W) $?. Great mexican food,
plastic flatware, 4 beer limit. (or was that 3 beers?)
Downtown:
Paramont Grill, 12 SW 1st Avenue $$$. Great lunches, some inventive
dishes. Reservations strongly recommended, since the restaurant
is tiny.
Emiliano's, 7 SE 1st Street $$.
Carribean/Puerto Rican cuisine, with
lovely tapas, nice desserts. Service may be slow at this locally
owned restaurant. Brenda Bayne sings jazz on First and Third
Monday evenings (6:30=9:00 p.m.) with local philosopher as one
of her sidemen.
Amelia's, 235 S. Main Street in the Sun Center $$$.
Italian cusine in a pleasant atmosphere; reservations recommended.
Liquid Ginger, 101 SE 2nd Place $$$. Asian fusion food in an elegant
setting.
Steve's Cafe Americain, 12 W. University (N) $$$. Upscale restaurant;
chef has penchant for Southwestish sauces, reservations recommended.
Dragonfly Sushi & Sake Company, 201 SE Second Avenue (S) $$$.
Ecletic menu, fusion and Japanese; interesting decor.
You'll Probably Need a Car:
Mildred's Big City Food, 3445 W. University
Avenue $$$. Sandwiches, soups and salads for lunch.
Dinner fare is usually elaborate and exotic. Desserts are excellent
but very rich, so plan ahead. Reservations strongly recommended.
Stonewood Tavern and Grill, 3812 Newberry Road $$$. Reportedly has
best porkchops in town; crab cakes not recommended. Dine early to
avoid competition from the movie crowd.

2441 NW 43rd Street Suite 13 $$$. Very inventive menus.
Lunch is served M-F only, dinner every day except on Sunday. Reservations
recommended since the place is small.
Satchel's, 1800 NE 23rd Avenue $$. Great pizza! a local
atmosphere.
Chop Stix Cafe, 3500 SW 13th Street $$. Wide variety of asian
dishes. While the place can be noisy, the view at lunch, sunset over Bivens
Arm is great - potential for alligator sightings.
Merlion Singapore Cuisine, 3610 SW 13th Street $$. Singaporean
cuisine, including Nyonya cuisine with Chinese cooking methods
and Malay spices.
The Happy Cow's Vegetarian Guide gives it the top rating for Gainesville;
it calls attention to the Java fried tofu.
Szechuan Panda, 3830 SW 13th Street $$. Chinese food. Open
Mondays, and good for groups.
Taste of India, 1207 SW 16th Avenue $$. Small, informal
restaurant with decent food.
In the Region:
Amrit Palace, 2635 SW College Road, OCALA $$. Best Indian
food in the area.
The Yearling, 14501 E. County Road 235, Cross Creek, FL (352)
466-3999. Florida Cracker fare: venison, crawdads, catfish,
alligator tail and frog legs; hush puppies, turnip greens,
cheese grits.
Located near the home of author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings.
