COURSE CONTENT: This course is designed to serve majors in mathematics, the sciences and engineering. We will learn the symbolic computation package MAPLE and use it to solve problems. The core topics are listed below. o Ch 6. Inverse Functions (6.1-6.3, 6.5, 6.6) o Ch 7. Techniques of Integration (7.1-7.4, 7.6, 7.7) o Ch 8. Applications of the Integral (8.1-8.6) o Ch 9. Sequences and Series (9.1-9.9) o Ch 10. Curves in the Plane (10.1-10.5) o Supplementary material on MAPLE (each student will be given a Math. dept. computer account) The scope of the course is defined by the content of the lectures, problem sessions, and the homework and reading assignments. COURSE GOALS: By the end of the semester, you should : 1. know how to communicate mathematical ideas effectively; 2. know the basic techniques and applications of the calculus of functions of one variable; 3. understand the concepts underlying the theory of calculus; 4. know how to use the computer package MAPLE. GRADING: There will be o In-class group problem sessions o Four gateway tests o Two Exams including the final exam o Some computer labs A score of at least 80% is required on EACH of the gateway tests to obtain a C for the course. If needed, any student may take a gateway re-test provided certain assigned problems are handed in. The final grade will be based on all four items above.
