Meeting Time
and Room: MWF period 6 in Little 233
Office Hours
During Final Exam Period:
Monday April 30 and Tuesday May 1, 1:30 - 3:30 both days.
Prerequisite:
This is the second course in a two course sequence. Students should
have taken the first course in the sequence, or be familiar with the
material. Notes from the previous course are available online. See:
Topology
1
Course
structure:
There will be no text for the course. Students will be given notes
which contain a list of numbered definitions, propositions, theorems,
etc. Each student will be placed on a team. Problems from the notes
will be assigned to each team. Each student should write a proof for
each of the problems assigned to his or her team and turn this in to
the instructor to be checked. In general, problems will be due each
Wednesday.
Of course students may also write proofs
for other problems from the notes in addition to the ones assigned to
his or her team! Students are encouraged to work together, but students
should not just copy other students work.
Students will also be expected to present their work to the class
(taking turns) as appropriate. Also, students will be expected to
follow each others presentations and determine whether or not each
proof is correct and sufficient.
We will discuss a few results which students will not be required to
prove and which will be presented by the instructor instead. Due to the
nature of the course, students must attend each day the class meets and
turn in problems on time.
Grading:
Grades will be based on written work turned in (50 percent),
attendance, class
presentations, and participation (10 percent), a midterm exam (15
percent) and a final exam (25 percent). The date of the midterm exam
will be announced later.
Goals of the
Course:
In addition to learning some basic topology, the student should expect
to gain a better understanding of mathematical proofs, and improve the
ability to organize, write, and present mathematical proofs.
Additional
Information:
1. In this course, we will have students who have registered for
MTG4303 section 4623 or MTG5317 section 6171. The expectations and
grading will be different for the two sections.
2. Any student who would like to request an accomodation because of a
disability should first register with the Dean of Students Office. The
Dean of Students Office will provide the student with documentation.
This documentation should be provided by the student to the instructor
when requesting an accomodation.
Final Exam:
The final exam will be given on Thursday, May 3, 12:30PM - 2:30PM.
