Core Courses (catalog-year 2004 and
earlier):
- Calculus: MAC 2312 (or 3512 or 3473) and MAC 2313
(or 3474)
- Differential Equations: MAP 2302
- Mathematical Statistics: STA 4321
- Computer Programming: One of
CIS 3020,
CGS 2425 (C++; Fortran),
CGS 2420 (Fortran),
CGS 2460 or CGS 3460 (C), or CGS 3464 (Pascal)
- Linear Algebra: MAS 4105
- Abstract Algebra: MAS 4301
- Advanced Calculus: MAA 4211-2 or MAA 4102-3.
See "Advanced Calculus Schedule" under
"Notes" below.
Notes: - Most high-school math courses, Precalculus,
Calculus 1-2-3, and first Differential Equations courses are taught
from a methods-oriented rather than theorem-oriented point of view.
This is not the case beyond Differential Equations. For this reason,
MAS 4105 now has as a prerequisite Numbers and Polynomials (MAS 3300)
or Sets and Logic (MHF 3202). MAS 3300 and MHF 3202 are "transition
courses" that prepare students for MAS 4105 and for other courses that
require the student not only to read and understand theorems and
proofs, but to write them as well.
- MAS 4105 is a prerequisite for many other courses (including
MAS 4301 and MAA 4211), and therefore should be taken as early as is
feasible; therefore so should MAS 3300 or MHF 3202. Both MAS 3300 and
MHF 3202 count towards the student's math-elective requirement as free
electives, but do not count towards any elective package. Transfer
students may wish to take MAS 3300 the summer between their second and
third years (currently, MHF 3202 is offered only in fall and spring
semesters).
- Advanced Calculus schedule. Students are expected to complete
one of the Advanced Calculus sequences in consecutive semesters
.
No Advanced Calculus 2 class (MAA 4212 or MAA 4103) is ever offered in
the fall.
MAA 4102 is offered only in the fall and spring, and MAA
4103 only in the spring and summer. Math-majors taking MAA
4102 in the fall are expected to take MAA 4103 in the spring;
math-majors taking MAA 4102 in the spring are expected to take MAA
4103 in the summer. Students who do not wish to take MAA 4103 over
the summer should not take MAA 4102 in the spring, but should wait
till the following fall to start the MAA 4102-4103 sequence.
Students planning to take MAA 4102 or MAA 4103 are expected to
register for the class at their advanced-registration appointment
times. Students who fail to do this and find the class closed when
they try to register may have their graduation dates delayed. This is
especially important for students planning to take spring MAA 4102 or
summer MAA 4103, for whom failure to register on time may result in
graduation being postponed from summer to the following spring, almost
a year.
MAA 4211 is offered only in the fall and MAA 4212 only in the
spring; a prerequisite for MAA 4212 is that the student complete MAA
4211 (not MAA 4102!)
the previous semester with a grade of at least C. Students who
complete MAA 4211 successfully but do not wish to take MAA 4212 are
allowed to take MAA 4103 in the spring instead, assuming seats are
available.
- In addition to the core courses, a math major must take at
least four math electives beyond the core
(12 credits). Two of these must be chosen to complete one of the elective packages
