Beyond the core courses, you must select at least four electives (total 12 credits) from the list below if your catalog-year is 2004 or earlier (the electives list for catalog-year 2005 or later is somewhat different). Below is the complete list of courses at the 4000-level and below that may be used towards the elective component of the math-major requirements. If a course numbered 4999 or below does not appear on this list (for example, MAT 4905 Individual Work), it does not count as a math-major elective. Note that MAT 4930 (Special Topics in Mathematics) does not count as a math-major elective unless approved by the Undergraduate Coordinator. Special Topics classes offered by any department other than Mathematics never count towards math-major requirements. 5000-, 6000-, and 7000- level courses offered by the Mathematics Department (only!) also count as math-major electives, except that MAT 6905 Individual Work never counts, and Special Topics classes (MAT 6932) count only if approved by the Undergraduate Coordinator. If your catalog-year is 2004 or earlier, two of your electives must satisfy one of the elective packages. On the chart below, "yes" indicates that a course may be used in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the indicated elective package (Pure Mathematics (Pure), Applied Mathematics (Appl.), Physics (Phys.), Computer Science (CS), or Statistics and Probability (Stat)); "req." indicates that the course is required for that package. However, be aware that for several of the packages, the requirements are more complicated than simply choosing any two courses labeled "yes" in that column; certain courses may work only in combination with certain other courses. The requirements for each package cannot be deduced from the chart below; to determine the requirements for each package you must visit the appropriate web page (click on links above) or see the 2004-05 Undergraduate Catalog. Important: Requirements may change from year to year. The specific requirements for a given student are determined by the student's catalog-year. The requirements listed on the math department website are intended to be those in the 2004-05 Undergraduate Catalog, but the student should check the revision-date at the bottom of each webpage visited. In the chart below, electives are organized by the departments offering them: Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Engineering (Comp. Eng.), Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE), and Physics.
