Title: Green's functions , eigenfunctions and resonance
Abstract:
Green's functions are very useful in solving linear
partial differential equations of mathematical physics .
As you may already know, the solution of an inhomogeneous linear diff. eq in one
variable is
obtained by adding a solution of the related homogeneous equation to a
particular solution . Green's functions provide a means to generalize
this to higher dimensions .
We introduce a general definition of the Green's function for an
operator on a linear space . We give an example of it's use in solving
the Helmholtz equation with homogeneous boundary conditions . In this
particular case we expand it in eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator
and define the notion of resonnance .
