Title: How Combinatorics is Saving the World Part III: The Wiener
Index as a Topological Invariant in Mathematical Chemistry and
its Myriad Applications to the Understanding of Phenylenes,
Hydrocarbons, and other Molecules and their Interactions.

Abstract:
This is the third of a four-part series surveying the numerous
contributions of combinatorics in various fields of the
natural sciences. The Wiener index is a graph theoretic property
which allows us to roughly measure the size of a graph or volume of a
corresponding
molecule. We will define the Wiener index, discuss some of its
applications in mathematical chemistry, and review some of the
recent results.
