Abstract

The purpose of this talk is to discuss the ingredients fundamental
to a well-written paper in applied mathematics.  While a paper
in pure mathematics requires the format of definition, theorem, and proof, a
paper in applied mathematics (where data is a central concern) requires
a structure based on the scientific method.  In particular, the paper should
be organized in five parts:

                 0.  Abstract
                 1.  Introduction
                 2.  Methods
                 3.  Results
                 4.  Conclusions

Of course, if the purpose of the paper is to analyze a particular
technique, then the more traditional format will be appropriate.

Other aspects of writing and speaking will also be discussed including
the quote "Mathematicians Give the Worst Talks."
