The SIAM Gators wishes to organize the Second SIAM Gators Student Conference at a regional level from March 3rd to March 5th, 2009. This conference will showcase mathematical research by undergraduate and graduate students and facilitate collaborative work among peers primarily in the following areas of Applied Mathematics:
March 3rd : Modeling in Biomathematics
Modeling in Biomathematics is the application of mathematical models to problems in biology and medicine. The Department of Mathematics at UF focuses on the areas of Population Dynamics, Mathematical Epidemiology, Mathematical Demography, Mathematical Ecology, Immunology, Pharmacokinetics, Dynamics of Controlled Bioreactors. Students are encouraged to apply abstracts in different areas of Biomathematics.Guest Speaker: Dr. Carlos Castillo-Chavez, Arizona State UniversityMarch 4th : Computational Methods/Optimization
Computational method and Optimization includes all areas relevant to Numerical analysis and its application including technological applications. The areas which are more of interest in the UF Mathematics department are Numerical Analysis, Matrix Analysis, Optimization, Optimal control, Finite Element Methods, Numerical solution of partial differential equations, Multigrid and domain decomposition . However, all kinds of talks relevant to this field are welcome.Guest Speaker: Dr. Stephen Wright, University of WisconsinMarch 5th : Medical Imaging/Signal Processing
At UF, current research projects in Medical Imaging range from the theoretical study to the interdisciplinary research in mathematics to biomedical image analysis. The real world projects include single channel and multi-channel MR image reconstruction with partially scanned data; diffusion weighted MR image reconstruction, characterization, and fiber tracking; functional MRI motion correction and activity map construction; the same modality and multi-modality deformable image registration with application in radiation therapy and ultra sound cardiac image and MR brain image segmentation with partial volume analysis. Abstracts in related and other fields of Medical Imaging and Signal Processing will be considered equally.Guest Speaker: Dr. Pengcheng Shi, Rochester Institute of Technology
Formed in October, 2002, the SIAM Gators held its First SIAM Gators Conference in March 3rd to March 4th, 2004. This was in fact the first ever student organized conference for SIAM. It was unique in that it was run entirely by students in the SIAM student group with faculty acting only as advisors.
