SIAM Gators is the student chapter of SIAM
"Society of industrial and applied mathematics"
at the University of Florida.
Following the great success of the first and second SIAM Gators student
conferences held in the Mathematics Department of the University of
Florida in 2004
and 2009, the SIAM Gators officers wish to host a third SIAM Gators student
conference on March 27–29, 2014.
The conference will focus on the following three areas in applied mathematics:
Numerical Optimization and Applications
Mathematical Algorithms in Imaging
Mathematical Biology and Modelling
The proposal to support the participants' travel expenses
has been submitted to NSF.
Conference will be held at the Department of Mathematics
at University of Florida.
The Mathematics Department is located at Little Hall
(Mathematics) near the intersection of SW 13th Street
and SW 2nd Avenue. Please see the
UF Campus Map
(Insert Little Hall in the search box).
The main office and reception desk
are on the third floor near the center of the building.
All the talks will take place in Little Hall at room 339.
The Mathematics Department telephone number is 353-392-0281
History of the First and Second SIAM Gators Conferences
The University of Florida (UF) SIAM student chapter was formed in October 2002. It
was one of the first SIAM chapters and it was named the SIAM Gators.
The first UF
SIAM Gators Conference, held in March 3-4, 2004, was SIAM’s first student
organized conference. A SIAM News article documenting the conference can be found
The conference was unique in that it was run entirely by students
in the SIAM chapter with faculty acting as advisors. The goal of the
conference was to bring together students in different areas of applied
mathematics to communicate ideas and network with one another.
The main topics of the conference were optimization, image processing,
and computational methods.
The First SIAM Gators Conference featured 17 student participants from
across the US including students from Princeton University, University of Washington,
University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, TexasA&M University,
Florida State University, University of South Carolina, and Pennsylvania
State University; there was one student from India.
In addition, there were eight students from the University of Florida.
There were also two faculty speakers, Professor
Terry Rockafellar from
the University of Washington and Professor
Biswa Nath Datta
from the University
of Northern Illinois.
The Second SIAM Gators Conference, March 3–5, 2009,
featured 25 student participants including students from the
University of Miami, Michigan Technological University, Pennsylvania
State University, University of Alabama, Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute, and Emory University.
There were also three faculty speakers,
from Arizona State University,
from University of Wisconsin, and
from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
National Science Foundation support of the previous SIAM Gators
Conference is gratefully acknowledged.
