The 1998 research topic is Representation Theory of Lie Groups. The Graduate Summer School and Research Programs are organized by David Vogan, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Jeffrey Adams, University of Maryland. About the Institute: The Institute for Advanced Study/Park City Mathematics Institute (IAS/PCMI) conducts programs that integrate the research and education components of the mathematics community in a unique way. The PCMI includes a Summer Session, a year-round High School Teacher Program, a Mentoring Program for Women in Mathematics, a Lecture Publication Series, and a Continuing Outreach Program. The PCMI's three-week Summer Session is built on the premise that dynamic interaction among mathematicians, educators and students is essential to the optimal functioning of the mathematical enterprise. The program seeks to promote this interaction by bringing together researchers, undergraduate faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, and high school mathematics teachers in separate but overlapping programs. All participants come together as equal partners in a supportive setting which facilitates research and education while fostering a strong sense of community. Graduate Summer School/Research Program: The lecture series in the Graduate Summer School will be delivered by the following mathematicians: Anthony Knapp, SUNY at Stony Brook; Jian-Shu Li, University of Maryland; Kari Vilonen, Brandeis University; David Vogan, MIT; Roger Zierau, Oklahoma State University Undergraduate Program: The Undergraduate Program is organized by Robert Bryant of Duke University. The lecturers in the program are: William Barker, Bowdoin College; Roger Howe, Yale University. High School Teacher Program: The High School Teacher Program lecturers: Naomi Fisher, University of Illinois at Chicago; Cynthia Hays, McCallum High School (Austin, Texas); James King, University of Washington; John Polking, Rice Universitys Paul J. Sally, University of Chicago. Mentoring Program for Women in Mathematics Women undergraduate and graduate students also have the opportunity to attend a Mentoring Program for Women in Mathematics which will be held at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, in May, 1998. This program is organized by Chuu-Lian Terng, Northeastern University, and Karen Uhlenbeck, University of Texas at Austin. A combination of lectures, seminars, working problem groups, mentoring and networking sessions, this program is an important opportunity to meet and interact with leading mathematicians. A full brochure and applications will be available in November 1997. Deadline for applications is February 15, 1998.
