One of the themes proposed for the 1998 Midwest Mathematics History Conference is the use of history of mathematics in the teaching of mathematics. We also anticipate organizing a session on the history of logic. Plans are also afoot to include a lecture/demonstration on the project to rebuild the Atanasoff-Berry computer, according to some the first electronic digital computer, originally built at Iowa State University in 1939/40. If you would like to present a talk on any aspect of the history of mathematics, please send your abstract to James Murdock, Department of Mathematics, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011. If you would like to present a talk on the history of logic, you may send your abstract to Irving Anellis at Modern Logic Multimedia, Inc., 2408 1/2 W. Lincoln Way, Ames, IA 50014-7217, or to Professor Murdock. As has become customary, Modern Logic Publishing plans to have an open board meeting with an invited hour speaker and a closed editorial board business meeting, and also hope to hold a special board session in the form of a round table discussion for past and present editorial board and advisory board on MLP's role in historiography of logic following an account by Irving Anellis of the origins and history of the journal "Modern Logic" and of Modern Logic Publishing. In addition, a reception for current and past board editorial board members and advisory board members will be held in the MLP editorial office the evening prior to the start of the conference. Modern Logic Publishing will hold an open house during the conference and everyone is invited to stop by for a visit. The organizing committee of the Midwest Mathematics History Conferences is applying for a grant from the National Science Foundation, and we may therefore be able to provide financial assistance for conference participants. The Midwest Mathematics History meeting will be held some time in late September or early October; the currently anticpated dates for the conference are 2-4 October 1998. Exact dates will be announced as soon as confirmed and will not be finalized until the schedule for the Iowa State University homecoming weekend has been determined.
