Welcome to the ``tip of the week'', a pithy kickshaw provided on a sometimes weekly basis. A new events calendar --------------------- In May 1997 we are introducing a version of the familiar Weekly Events calendar which should require much less human intervention than the old one did. (You may have noticed that we went many weeks in the spring semester without a current calendar.) Command-line access ------------------- You can read the weekly events calendar from any shell window by typing ``events week'', or just ``events''. The seminar-by-seminar listings are not currently available - we hope that individual seminars will take up the slack with Web pages which list at least as much information as those schedules did. Window system access -------------------- The ``Weekly Events'' item in the math department's main menu for the X11 window system displays the current weekly events calendar. Email notification ------------------ We are still working on an automated scheme for updating the posted calendar and sending out email versions at the head of each week. These should be working by the end of Summer 1997. World Wide Web -------------- The Uniform Resource Locator for our events lists and tools is http://www.math.ufl.edu/events/ -- you can also find this document through several paths starting with the department home page. The Web page version of the events calendar gives ready access to past and future weeks of the semester as well as the current week. Submitting events for the calendar ---------------------------------- The URL above provides access to the password-protected calendar submission tools. The main tool is a simple form which one fills out from a Web browser (any forms-capable browser will work, including Lynx). Seminar leaders/reporters should send email to www@math.ufl.edu to request the password. Printed versions ---------------- You can run off a paper copy of the weekly schedule from the print function of any browser. Bugs and suggestions -------------------- Summer 1997 is a shakedown cruise for the events calendar tools. Since we need an accurate, easily-maintained events calendar, your suggestions and bug reports are eagerly welcomed. Please send email to cws@math.ufl.edu. ---------------------- Past Tips of the Week are found in /depot/documentation/tips. They may also be consulted through the Documentation/Online Help menu item of the window system's main menu or through Info mode in the Emacs editor. cws@math.ufl.edu Subject: New events calendar
