Welcome to the ``tip of the week'', a pithy kickshaw provided on a virtually weekly basis. New users of the math network are encouraged to consult the ``Sun Starter'' document available in the Little Hall lab's document rack on the wall by the printer. The department's policy on computer use can also be found there, as well as online from the main menu in our window system. Online help is readily available from the window system's menus: [1] The ``manual pages'' are a traditional feature of the Unix operating system. To open up a reader for the manual pages, (a) move the mouse so that the pointer is on the background, (b) hold down the right mouse button to get the Main Menu, (c) then drag down to Documentation and pull the mouse to the right to get the Documentation Submenu, (d) select `xman', and let go of the mouse button. [2] The ``Info mode'' of the Emacs editor is available both within Emacs and from the main menu (follow the directions above, but select `Info mode browser' rather than `xman'; touch the question mark key to learn how to navigate the browser). More online documentation is found in the directories under /depot/documentation. Paper documents are available in the Little Hall lab and *must not* be removed from that room. You can email questions or problem reports to the system administrators at the address ``consult@math.ufl.edu''. Suggestions for future Tips of the Week can be sent to that address, too. cws@math.ufl.edu Subject: online help
