DIALUPS (This document was last modified on September 10, 1997.) NOTICE: The dialups, a limited resource, have been busy frequently. Therefore: Do NOT play games when logged in via modem. Class accounts may not use dialups to telnet to other hosts. If you are found doing the above then you will be warned. If it happens again your modem privileges will be removed for two weeks. Further violations may result in total loss of dialup privileges. Any non-mathematical use of the computers that interferes with department work is prohibited. Please read the Department policy in "/depot/documentation/admin/policy.ascii" or at the Uniform Resource Locator http://www.math.ufl.edu/help/policy.ascii. Please report modem problems to consult@math.ufl.edu. Please be sure to give a full explanation of the problem. Thanks! ------------------------------------------------------- This is the manual page on our dialups: DIALUP(LOCAL) MISC. REFERENCE MANUAL PAGES DIALUP(LOCAL) NAME dialup - UF Mathematics Department Dialup Users Guide DESCRIPTION This is a local guide for dialup users of the UF Math Department's Local Area Network (LAN). It is intended for users previously experienced with dialup (modem) telecommun- ication. PARAMETERS The current modem configuration for the Math Department is a Telebit Netblazer with 9 dialup lines. All of these lines have 14.4k baud modems attached. For most effective use of these lines your settings should be 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit. If your modem is 14.4k baud then please set your speed to 19200, or 38400 (some support 57600) as you will need a faster speed for data compression. If you modem is 9600 baud you may want to use 19200 baud. Please use vt100 as your terminal type. MODEM NUMBERS 392-7421 392-7422 392-7423 392-7424 392-7425 All the lines are on a rotary. Dial the first number, and a unconnected modem will pick up. You may wish to connect to the CIRCA VAXen (8N1 at 14.4k baud) and then ``telnet'' to the the Math depart- ment by typing ``telnet node.math.ufl.edu'' where ``node'' could be any of the Math Sun names. Call 392-help to get the VAXen dialin number. LOGIN The Mathematics Department machines autodetect your baud rate and will try to connect at the highest baud rate that you can manage. Login as normal when you see the "login:" prompt. FILE TRANSFER The Math machines support the standard Zmodem (sz/rz), Ymo- dem (sb/rb), Xmodem (sx/rx), and Kermit (kermit) protocols. If you are using zmodem on a high speed modem, it is sug- gested you use "sz -w 2048". If you are receiving UNIX files on a MS-DOS machine and using zmodem, use the -a parameter. For more information please see the following man pages: SEE ALSO sz(1), xmodem(1), kermit(1), rlogin(1), telnet(1) BUGS Sometimes modems get confused or otherwise dysfunctional. If this happens, try a higher number in the rotary to skip the dysfunctional one. If a modem is dysfunctional and not answering it may seem that all the lines are not working. This is normaly not the case, as you are being rotored to the unused modem, the one that does not work. Try dialing other numbers. Please send bug reports to consult@math.ufl.edu via elec- tronic mail. AUTHORS Scot Gardner Brian J. Smith Dallas Antley Sun Release 4L.a1st change: Thu Feb 24 10:40:58 EST 1994 2
