Our Constitution
- Purpose
The purpose of the GMA shall be to oversee the planning
and execution of graduate student activities in the department of
mathematics. Theses activities include but are not limited to: The
Graduate Student Seminar, The Noetherian Ring Seminar, the Fall
and Spring departmental picnics, the Mentoring Program for graduate
students entering the department, the election of the representative of
the Math department to the Graduate Student Council, and the election of
the graduate student member of the graduate Committee of the Department
of Mathematics.
- Membership
All graduate students in the Department shall be members of the GMA.
Faculty, staff, and student spouses may be associate (non-voting) members.
- Non-Discrimination Statement
The GMA will not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color,
sex, age, national origin, or disability.
- Meetings
The GMA shall have a minimum of one meeting per semester.
Officers may authorize more frequent meetings as needed.
- Dues
There are no dues for the GMA.
- Officers
- Officers shall server terms lasting from the January after election
until the following January.
- Officers are elected by the following procedure: nominations shall
be taken by email or in written format at least one week prior to the
election. Candidates shall leave the room while each is discussed
in a pro-con-con-pro format. The membership present shall then vote.
A simple majority elects a candidate to an office.
- If an office is vacated during the term, a new election for that office shall be
held, using the procedures

- Any officer of the GMA may be impeached by a vote of 3/4 of the members
at a meeting where a quorum is present.
- Duties
- President
The duties of the President shall be to call and conduct
all meetings of the GMA and its officers, as well as to oversee the
delegation of responsibilities to other officers.
- Vice President
The duties of the vice-President shall be to function as president
in the event that the president is absent or unable to perform his/her
duties. It shall further be the duty of the VP to oversee the organization
of both the Graduate Student Seminar and the Noetherian Ring Seminar.
- Secretary/Treasurer
The duties of the Secretary/Treasurer shall be to keep
minutes of each meeting of the GMA and its officers, and to oversee
any financial transactions between the Department of Mathematics and
the GMA members, which concern the GMA.
- Faculty Advisor
The Faculty Advisor to the GMA shall be chosen by a vote of the membership
and shall be a faculty member of the department of Mathematics. The duties
of the Faculty Advisor shall be to advise the officers and members of the GMA
regarding the activities of the Association.
- Regulations
- The GMA shall adhere to the Student Guide and other laws, rules, and
regulations governing the University of Florida and its Students.
- Harassment or hazing of any member of the GMA by those affiliated
with the GMA will not be allowed or tolerated.
- Any member of the GMA may at any time disassociate themselves from
the GMA without fear of harassment or retribution.
- Amendment
Proposed amendments to this constitution may be drafted by any member
or officer of the GMA. Proposed amendments shall be announced at least
one week prior to the meeting of the membership at which they are to
be voted on. Amendments must be discussed at the meeting and may only
be passed by a 2/3 majority of the membership at a meeting where a
quorum is present.
