Abstract: Making use of the recent autobiography of Saunders MacLane and my own memories of him, I'll try to convey some idea of him as an outstanding man and mathematician.
About the talk and the speaker: Mathematics Graduate Research
Professor John Thompson wrote a revolutionary PhD thesis in Group
Theory at the University of Chicago under the direction
of Saunders MacLane more than four decades ago. MacLane, one of
the most prominent mathematicians of the twentieth century, passed
away earlier this year. In this talk Professor Thompson will pay a
tribute to his great teacher Saunders MacLane.
