Robert L. Long

After serving in the United States Marines from 1959 to 1963, Robert L. Long went to Haverford College and then to the University of Illinois where he took his doctorate in 1970. From 1970 to 1972 he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University. He joined the Mathematics Department at the University of Florida in 1972. His three major interests were mathematics, playing the classical guitar, and philosophy. Among his best known publications is Algebraic Number Theory, which grew out of a popular course he gave at the University of Florida in 1972-1973. He appeared frequently in concerts sponsored by the Music Department. In matters of philosophy he described himself as ``strictly an amateur,'' interested primarily in questions generally classified under ``theory of knowledge'' and ``theory of value.'' He was convinced that we all live ``on the brink of philosophy'' and was constantly amazed by the skill with which so many avoid it.
