Mathematics professor Yunmei Chen has been appointed as Gibson Term Professor for 2001-02 by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. A total of 6 such term professorships were awarded this year in the College. These term professorships were created in 1995 and have been awarded to CLAS faculty who excel both in scholarship and teaching. These term professorships funded entirely by private sources, allow the College to recognize faculty who are making a difference in the classroom as well as through their research and scholarship. The award this year carries a salary supplement of $6,000 and a research supplement of $2,500. Professor Yunmei Chen is a world authority in the area of partial differential equations, and especially in nonlinear evolution equations and harmonic maps. More recently, her research interests have broadened into the exciting area of computer imaging. Her fundamental research has been continuously supported by the National Science Foundation and other agencies. In addition to being a world class researcher, Professor Chen is an outstanding teacher and received the prestigious Teaching Incentive Program (TIP) award twice - in 1994, and 1998. Thus in view of sustained excellence in both scholarship and teaching, Professor Chen was an appropriate choice for this award.
