MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT ACADEMIC EVENTS - SPRING 2005

The University of Florida Mathematics Department is having yet another spring term packed with high quality academic events. Most (but not all) events are connected with the Special Year in Number Theory and Combinatorics 2004-05.

January 23 - February 3
VISIT OF PROFESSOR HERSHEL FARKAS, Hebrew University, Jerusalem, for two weeks (Jan 23-Feb 3). Prof. Farkas is a world authority on theta functions and Riemann surfaces. He will give two talks for the number theory and combinatorics seminars on Jan 25 and Feb 1.
January 25 - March 25
VISIT OF EVAN PUGH PROFESSOR GEORGE ANDREWS, Penn State University, for two months. Prof. Andrews who was recently elected to the National Academy of Sciences, will give eight lectures of which two will be to a general audience at the Keene Faculty Center organized by the CLAS Dean's Math-Sci Committee. The dates of his six lectures in the math dept are Jan 24, Feb 8, 15, 22, Mar 15 and 22. The dates of the lectures at the Keene Center are Feb 14 and 22.
Monday, February 21
HISTORY LECTURE BY PROFESSOR MICHEL WALDSCHMIDT, University of Paris VI. Michel Waldschmidt, a world authority in transcendental number theory, recently finished his term as President of the French Mathematical Society.
February 28 - March 4
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ARITHMETIC GEOMETRY organized by Professors Richard Crew, Kevin Keating and Norm Levin.
Monday, March 7
SEVENTH ERDOS COLLOQUIUM BY FIELDS MEDALIST RICHARD BORCHERDS, University of California, Berkeley.
March 7 - 11
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PATTERN AVOIDING PERMUTATIONS organized by Professor Miklos Bona
Wednesday, March 9
HISTORY LECTURE BY DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR DORON ZEILBERGER, Rutgers University. Professor Zeilberger (along with Herb Wilf) was a winner of the 1998 Steele Prize of the AMS for the famous W-Z Algorithm.

Thursday, March 10
SECOND CENTER FOR APPLIED MATH COLLOQUIUM BY DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR CARL POMERANCE, Dartmouth University. Prof. Pomerance is a world authority in primality testing and factoring large numbers, which has applications in cryptography.
Monday, March 21
HISTORY LECTURE BY PROFESSOR RICHARD ASKEY, University of Wisconsin, Madison. Professor Askey, one of the premier authorities on special functions, is a Member of the National Academy of Sciences. He is one of the "gang of three" in the world of Ramanujan along with George Andrews and Bruce Berndt.
April 15 - 17
SOUTHEASTERN LOGIC SYMPOSIUM, organized by Professors Doug Cenzer and Jindrich Zapletal
Saturday, April 30
GRADUATE RESEARCH PROFESSOR JOHN THOMPSON to be honored with the CLAS DISTINGUISHED SCHOLAR AWARD at the CLAS Commencement Ceremony.
April or May
HISTORY LECTURE BY PROFESSOR PIERRE BERTHELOT, University of Rennes. Professor Berthelot is a leading expert in Algebraic Geometry and was a student of Fields Medalist Alexandre Grothendieck. (Date of this talk is yet to be determined.)
