Abstract:
Lagrange, Gauss, Abel, Galois, Cauchy and Sylow are some of the founders of Group Theory. I shall consider the consider the contributions of various mathematicians beginning with Euclid.

Graduate Research Professor John G. Thompson is the world's foremost authority on Group Theory, a branch of mathematics dealing with the study of symmetries. Group Theory has widespread applications in several fields including Physics and Chemistry. For his path breaking contributions to Group Theory, Thompson has received numerous awards and recognitions including the Cole Prize of the American Mathematical Society in 1966, the Fields Medal in 1970, the Sylvester Medal of the Royal Society in 1987, the Poincaré Medal in 1987, the Wolf Prize in 1992, and the National Medal of Science in 2000.
