January 4: The editor of the January 2001 issue of Concerns of Young Mathematicians , the newsletter of the Young Mathematicians Network , was alum Chawne Kimber , Ph.D. 1999.
On January 5, the submission date of March 30 for the 2001 Robert Long Scholarship Essay Competition was announced.
On January 10, the Department learned that Tina Carter was selected to receive a College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Teacher of the Year Award for 2000-2001.
On January 17, Jenny Buxe gave a talk for Pi Mu Epsilon, the local chapter of the national mathematics honor society. Her title was Roger Penrose's Kites and Darts, not your average toys.
On January 19, Krishnaswami Alladi announced the Department of Mathematics will conduct five Special Year Long Programs, starting with those listed below.
- Fall 2001-Spring 2002: Special Year in Topology and Dynamical Systems
- Fall 2002-Spring 2003: Special Year in Algebra

On February 12, Joe Stanis gave a talk for Pi Mu Epsilon, the local chapter of the national mathematics honor society. His title was Artificial intelligence: the climax or catastrophe of human ingenuity?
Feb. 15-16, Hyman Bass gave the Algebra Seminar on Feb. 15, and the following day, he gave the 2001 Erdos Colloquium, and cohosted a brown bag luncheon discussion with Deborah Ball in the Teaching Seminar.

March 8-10: Seminar on Stochastic Processes 2001
On March 12, Persi Diaconis gave the 2001 Ulam Colloquium. His talk, On Coincidences, was entertaining and accessible to a broad audience.

On March 25, the Spring Picnic of the Department of Mathematics was held at the Cypress Lodge, Lake Wauberg, North Entrance, starting at 1:00 pm. The picnic was organized by the Graduate Mathematics Association. Tina Carter took pictures at the picnic.

March 30 was the submission date for the 2001 Robert Long Scholarship Essay Competition.

March 30, Krishnaswami Alladi announced that Alexander Dranishnikov has been awarded a University of Florida Research Foundation Professorship for three years beginning Summer 2001.

April is Math Awareness Month. Thanks to everyone who participated in the Gatorade^® brainteaser contest. There were several very nice entries, so choosing a winner was difficult:
1st prize: Ron Mears (MAC 1147)
2nd prize: Sheylynne Miller (MAC 2311)
Honorable mention: Jonathan Kombrinck (MAC 2311), Lara Rauhecker (MGF 1106)
On April 4, there was a special Reception in honor of Professor John Thompson
On April 26, the Department of Mathematics annual Recognition of Student, Staff and Faculty accomplishments was held at 1:30 pm.
On April 28-29: Eighth Southeastern Logic Symposium.
