Concerns of Young Mathematicians , the newsletter of the Young Mathematicians Network ,

- On January 5, the submission date of March 30 for the 2001
Robert Long
Scholarship Essay Competition was announced.
- On January 10, the Department learned that
Tina
Carter was selected to receive a
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Teacher of the Year
Award for 2000-2001.
- On January 17, Jenny
Buxe gave a talk for
Pi Mu
Epsilon, the local chapter of the national mathematics honor
society. Her title was Roger Penrose's Kites and Darts, not
your average toys.
- On January 19, Krishnaswami Alladi announced the Department
of Mathematics will conduct five Special Year Long Programs,
starting with those listed below.
- Fall 2001-Spring 2002: Special Year in Topology and
Dynamical Systems

- On March 12, Persi Diaconis gave the 2001
Ulam Colloquium. His talk, On Coincidences,
was entertaining and accessible to a broad audience.

- On March 25, the Spring Picnic of the Department of Mathematics
was held at the Cypress Lodge, Lake Wauberg, North Entrance,
starting at 1:00 pm. The picnic was organized by the
Graduate Mathematics Association.
