Summer 2000 News and Events in Mathematics

  • On May 24, the seven Millennium Prize Problems (each worth $1 million) were announced by the Clay Mathematics Institute.
  • In Summer A 2000, Web-based Precalculus was available.
  • The Summer Tutor Lab (for classes up to the level of Calculus 1) opened for business in Little 368 both Summer A and Summer B.
  • John Kenelly, Ph.D. 1961, is the chair of Casio's International Committee of Education Advisors, and will be working with its regional committees: Europe, US, Asia and South/Central America.
  • June was the 50th anniversary of the first Ph.D. awarded in mathematics. We now have posted information on Ph.D. Alumni.
  • SAYIT (Summer Academic Youth Institute in Technology) is a summer mathematics program for minority youth from local high schools. This year it will be held from July 3 to August 10, 2000.
  • July 4, Alladi announced that the Erdos Colloquium lecture in Spring 2001 will be given by AMS President-elect Hyman Bass of University of Michigan.
