Sets and Logic

Prerequisites:

grade of C or better in a UF math course.

Catalog Description:

Examples of sets, operations on sets, set algebra, Venn diagrams, truth tables, tautologies, applications to mathematical arguments and mathematical induction. Taking one (but not both) of MAS 3300 and MHF 3202 is required of mathematics majors. MHF 3202 can also be very useful for prospective and in-service secondary-and middle school teachers. (M) (MR)

Sets, Functions and Logic, 2nd Edition, by Keith J. Devlin, RCH Publishers.

Content:

MHF 3202 is a 3 credit course which covers the use of language in mathematics, set theory, functions, relations, and logic, with additional topics at the discretion of the professor (e.g. Boolean algebras, symmetries of the plane, wallpaper patterns). (Chapters 1-4 of the text).

This course is designed to serve students in mathematics, mathematics education, prospective and in-service middle and high school teachers, computer science and others. It is taught in lecture format in small sections.
