MAS 3300
Numbers and Polynomials

Credits: 3

Prerequisites:

grade of C or better in a UF math course; this requirement is waived for transfer students with junior standing.

Catalog Description:

This course emphasizes theorems and proofs. Topics include algebraic and order properties of the real numbers, introduction to number theory, rational numbers and their decimal expansions, uncountability of the real numbers, complex numbers, irreducible polynomials over the integral, rational, real and complex numbers, elementary theory of equations. Taking one (but not both) of MAS 3300 and MHF 3202 is required of mathematics majors. MAS 3300 is also particularly useful for prospective secondary-school mathematics teachers. (M) (MR)

Content:

MAS 3300 is an introduction to formal mathematics. The emphasis in this course is not on learning facts, but on writing clear and rigorous proofs. The course provides the opportunity to examine in detail the structure of number systems and polynomials over these number systems, and to learn the careful art of mathematical reasoning.

The student is expected to work through the notes, proving the theorems (proofs aren't in the notes) and working the exercises.

The course is designed for mathematics majors and others interested in making the transition from techniques courses (e.g. calculus) to conceptual mathematics and algorithmic computer science. It is especially useful for prospective high school teachers.

Offered:

Fall, Spring and Summer A
