Introduction to Actuarial Mathematics

Prerequisites:

grade of C or better in MAC 2312, MAC 2512 or MAC 3473.

Catalog Description:

Amount function, simple and compound interest, present value, dollar-weighted and time-weighted rates, force of interest, discrete and continuous annuities, bonds, amortization, capitalization, and applications.

Textbook:

Theory of Interest and Life Contingencies, with Pension Applications, 3rd Edition, by M. Parmenter, ACTEX publications, 1999.

Content:

MAP 3170 is a 3 credit course which covers the mathematical theory behind compound interest, annuities, mortgages, and bonds. (Chapters 1-5 of the text).

This course is designed to serve students in business, actuarial science, statistics, and mathematics. It is taught in lecture format in small sections.

Specific topics include the amount function, simple and compound interest, present value, dollar-weighted and time-weighted rates, force of interest, discrete and continuous annuities, bonds, amortization, capitalization and applications.
