strong background in precalculus.

Catalog Description:

A geometric and heuristic approach to calculus; differentiation and integration of simple algebraic and exponential functions; applications to graphing, marginal analysis, optimization, and areas and volumes. (M) (MR) (See note)

Content:

MAC 2233 is a course surveying the basic calculus. It is intended for majors in business, finance, economics, building construction, and the life sciences. It is the first term of a two semester sequence whose sequel is MAC 2234 Survey of Calculus 2.

Detailed Prerequisites:

MAC 2233 assumes you have the essential algebra skills necessary for the course. Students who register for MAC 2233 should satisfy the appropriate prerequisites for the course:
  • a score of 16 or better on the algebra portion of the Calculus Readiness Assessment;
  • a grade of C or better in MAC 1140 or MAC 1147;
  • AP or IB credit in MAC 2233 or MAC 2311.
If you have AP/IB credit for MAC 2233 and enroll in this course, then you give up that AP/IB credit.

Chapter 0 in the text provides a precalculus review, and we highly recommend that anyone having difficulty with the material covered in that review or the first few lectures of the course first take MAC 1140, a three credit review of College Algebra, or MAC 1147, a four credit course in Precalculus.

Textbook:

Applied Calculus by Tan, 6th edition, Thomson/Brooks Cole.
The MAC 2233 Student Guide (see below) is also required during Spring, Summer and Fall terms.
