MAC 1140
Precalculus Algebra

Credits: 3

Prerequisites:

None.

Catalog Description:

College algebra, functions, coordinates geometry, exponential and logarithmic functions. (M) (MR) (See note)

Content:

MAC 1140, a review of algebra, is designed to prepare students for calculus. By itself, MAC 1140 meets the prerequisite for MAC 2233 (Survey of Calculus 1) but not for MAC2311 (Analytic Geometry and Calculus 1). If your major requires trigonometry or a complete precalculus course, or if you plan to go on to MAC 2311 (Analytic Geometry and Calculus 1)--the engineering and scientific calculus--then you should either take MAC 1147 or take both MAC 1140 and MAC 1114 (Trigonometry).

The sequence MAC 1140 - MAC 1114 covers same material and uses the same textbook as the one-semester, faster-paced course MAC 1147. Therefore, you may not receive general education or Gordon Rule credits for both MAC 1147 and MAC 1140, or for both MAC1147 and MAC 1114. If you have already received credit for MAC 1147 or MAC 1142 (an older number for MAC 1147), then do not register for MAC 1140 or MAC 1114.

Students intending to satisfy general education and Gordon Rule requirements in mathematics, but who are not especially interested in college-level algebra and do not need or want precalculus or calculus, generally should choose their math and math-related courses from the following list, rather taking than MAC 1147 or MAC 1140.

Textbook:

Precalculus with Limits (4th edition) by Larson, Hostetler, Edwards
(A Student's Solution Manual is available to accompany the text but is not required.)
