Introduction to Numerical Linear Algebra

Prerequisites:-
experience with a scientific programming language, and a grade of C or better in MAS 3114 or MAS 4105.
Catalog Description:-
Topics in linear algebra most useful in applications with emphasis on the numerical methods involved: direct and iterative solutions to systems of linear equations; matrix norms; Householder transformations; singular value decomposition; least squares and the generalized inverse; QR method for computing eigenvalues; condition number of linear systems and eigensystems.

MAS 4124
is a second course in linear algebra (3 credits)
that focuses on the topics most useful in applications,
with special emphasis on the numerical techniques involved.
Some topics include Gaussian elimination, LU factorization,
iterative methods, least squares problems, Householder
transformations, Givens rotations, singular value decomposition,
generalized inverses, eigenvalue problems, the power method,
and the QR algorithm.
There are typically several computer projects, usually using
MATLAB, a system providing easy access to numerical algorithms
for matrix computations.
A more theoretical second course is
MAS 4107 Linear Algebra 2.
This course is designed to serve majors in mathematics,
computer science, quantitative sciences, and engineering.
