COURSE DESCRIPTION

UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA - DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

COURSE NUMBER: MAS 3114 CREDIT HOURS: 3 DATE: AUGUST 2002

COURSE TITLE: Computational Linear Algebra

ADOPTED TEXTBOOK: Linear Algebra and Its Application, by Lay; 3rd Edition; A-W (Publisher)

FACULTY COURSE CONTACTS: R. Smith

PREREQUISITES: MAC 2312 and knowledge of a scientific programming language.

INSTRUCTIONAL FORMAT: Lecture

Students whom this course is designed to serve: Science, Computer Science, and Engineering majors and Mathematics minors. Mathematics majors are required to take MAS 4105.

Content and character of course:

Elementary Linear Algebra:

Linear systems, matrices, determinants, vectors, vector spaces, linear transformations, inner products, eigenvalues, applications.

The course stresses the computational nature of the topics. Computer projects are assigned (around 4-6 per semester). Proofs are not stressed as much as in MAS 4105. Most instructors require the students to learn MATLAB, a programming environment, for the projects.
